Aircon issue or not ?
« on: 25 February 2009, 14:50 »
Hi guys,
I just got my car serviced there last week (07 GTI), and today I noticed an odd whining noise when driving to work. When I turned off the climate control, the noise stops a few seconds later.

I got out and when I open the door there's a VERY loud noise coming from the engine bay! I opened the bonnet and sure enough I can see the radiator fan going like the clappers, full pelt. It seems that's what creating the racket. If I turn off the aircon, the fan stops soon after and so does the noise.

I never noticed this before, and I have the aircon on 24-7. Never noticed the fan making noise before. Also, after this, I turned down the air-con to "LO" and I'm not convinced its blowing out icey-cold air, it seemed more lukewarm!

As luck would have it, my warranty is up today!

Any ideas before I tackle the dealers? Does it sound like I've got problems?

Any ideas lads?!

I did a quick search on here, and sure enough, I found this thread, discussing the loud radiator fans issue: http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=96316.0

Thing is, I never noticed the fans being that loud before, to the point where I could hear it when inside the car! Switching the aircon off made the rad fan shut down a few seconds later, so they are obviously linked? And it's not like today was a roasting July afternoon, I was only after starting the car up, the engine relatively cool, and the rad fan was going like that, surely that cant be right?

I spoke to the dealers on my way home, and predictably they fobbed me off... mainly cos it didn't do it when I brought him out to look at it... sods bloody law.

And as I said, I'm not so sure my aircon is blowing as cold as it used to. It appears to be working correctly, but when I stick it on LO, I don't think its as cold as it should be. That being said, its difficult to test this in mid february

cheers... I'll keep an eye on it over next few days. Took the car for a spirited spin tonight, with aircon on, and fans didn't make a racket at all... we'll see.

Got this sorted out, under warranty (just about!) thankfully.

The aircon was at fault. A pressure sensor (??) was playing up, this caused virtually all the gas to leak out. So the air wasn't being chilled at all.

All OK now anyway it seems.

Result, same thing happened to me a few months ago, air wasn't blowing too cold. The dealer replaced the Compressor, Sensor, some valve  and regassed the system, all under warranty

Who says dealers are crap
