« on: 24 February 2009, 21:45 »
Hey Guys

My Mk3 Golf which i bought 2 weeks ago has a few small problems and i was wondering if u could help.

The List as follows:

Hesitation when accelerating.
Exhaust sounds like its blowing from the front of the car, exhaust from the cat back is new.
Car sounds like a diesel van at low revs.

I have changed: Oil, Plugs, Distributer Cap and Rotor arm.

This Hesitation problem is a common one, I have it badly on my AAM engine and cant get to the bottom of it, i find the more i drive it the better it gets,  How ever saying that i did tweek my timing the other day and it really sprung to life!  I think there are a few sensors in the Injection unit that tend to fail and cause this problem,  I dont know about you but i find it runs very rich with it too.   Ideally get it on VAG-COM, Mine came up with one fault which could be related.. Never fixed that though.

Exhaust could be leaking from the maifold if it sounds that noisy,  worth getting it up on a ramp to see where its coming from, the 1.8L engines usualy run nice and quiet

Vag-com is the DIY Method using a laptop and cable.. Most garages will have diagnostics kit that can read it,  can be a bit costly though.  I think iirc, its the "Air intake temp sensor" that is causing mine to run like this,  or at least that is the only fault it finds..  Its built into the SPI unit which is realtivly simple to swap over,  costs £££ new but i was quoted £25 from a scrappy,  If you do go down that route remember there are two versions of the 1.8,  the AAM 75bhp and the later 90BHP (i forget the code to that one)

mine is definitey the AAM it says so on the cabbelt cover,
Does anyone here have a version of vagcom i could Plug my car in to? Im in kent.

It also seems to be lacking in power, i know its an 8v with SOHC but still would like a few extra, if not will have to wait to get the VR
