engine conversion 1.8 8 to 2.0 16 abf syncro
« on: 23 February 2009, 12:00 »
i ordered a new engine when it arrived it was a seat i no there the same engine but as my machanic was fitting it he said i need lots more parts
the engine came with block loom box he has said i need "you need lower rad hose, both matrix pipes, the engine loom, car loom and ecu from a mk2 golf gti 16v engine bay power loom"
"the loom and ecu you have is from a seat and the power loom and half the car electrics are intergrated in to the loom, you could do it with this loom but it would take a sparky a week to build a loom for it and prob cost about a grand so its better to find the right one"
im a plumber and no naff all about engines can any help is he being lazy and trying to make the job easier for him self

for the radiator, tell him to fit a front MK2 16v front coolant flange and thermostat housing, then your old rad can be used.  Old matrix hoses will fit right onto the SEAT pipes.

as for the electrics side, this is the sticking point. sounds like your MK2 is a pre-90 right?  if so for plug & play-ness a complete post-90 MK2 in-car and also engine bay lighting wiring loom is required, then the SEAT engine loom will plug right in.  Its either that or the SEAT engine loom needs to be spliced into the MK2 engine wiring loom plug behind the fusebox, whichever your mechanic is more enclined to do.

Other option is to run it on MK2 16v engine managment, but ideally you want to use the SEAT stuff if you have it to hand.

tricky as the syncro has extra wiring for the rear diff n stuff... not really in a position to advise on that part of things, danny or diamon hell should be along shortly to advise hopefully.

given the choice id prefer to 90spec the car, and plug the seat engine loom in, but you would need to reverse-engineer the syncro part to make sure all the diff bits work as they should?

Other option is as i say splice the abf loom into the fusebox using the old engine plug, which isnt that dificult but you might end up paying thru the nose. Print out my fusebox FAQ though and pm me your email addy and i'll send pre & post90 MK2 diagrams + ABF engine loom, print them off too and the sparky should have an easier time of it.  Once you strip the engine loom down there arnt many wires that need to be spliced, if you kept as much of the pre-90 engine loom as possible and onyl fit the ECU bits n pieces.

Really you need to have a long conversation with the mechanic, at the end of the day he is the one having to do all the work so you want to keep him happy

Problem with going k-jet is you need the k-jet main pump & fuel lines, metering head, inlets etc plus you still need the enghine bay loom as well, but at least if you find a pre-90 one it'll plug straight in and work. (assuming the syncro bits are integrated with the lighting loom?)

couple of questions first

1)  out of whitch seat did the loom come from,   the cordoba looms look a bit of a pita to use compared to the toledo and mk3 golf looms.
2) whitch gearbox are you useing ?  cabel change or rod change

my enigne loom is currently doing nether of options listed below,  the fuseboard seemed to want to play billy suggers when i connected the loom up useing loose relays in holders it ran fine so that got tidyed up and cliped on top bit of a pain at times but been working just fine.  tho as i have an almost comlete 90 speck conversion inthe shed and a couple of abf looms i think i'll be convering the car to 90 spec at some point
all the VW's have gone bar 1.

I think the original poster has bitten off a big fat chunk of too-much-in-your-mouth-to-even-think-about-chewing-on-it.

Doesn't matter what the gearbox is, or what the loom is.  There's a bucketload of custom fabricated parts you're going to need.
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.
