Knocking noise

Still got a knocking noise sometimes when I pull away or go over a bump it sometimes knocks. Replaced the dogbone mount so I know its not that. Put it in gear with the handbrake on and rocked it and my dad said the engine was moving backwards so im thinking it could be one of the side engine mounts. Any ideas?

Golf SOLD. Replaced with a Yamaha Raptor 660 quad and loving it. This will be replaced in August with a Raptor 700. Sold the quad now got a Vectra GSI 2.5 V6 and its the nuts.

Ball joint or top mount maybe? Engine mount should knock if you rev without moving i would have thought?  :huh:

My mate said maybe a ball joint and I thought top mount it doesnt knock when you rev it only if you floor it or hit a bump or sometimes when pulling away on a hill. Was suppose to be having my remap done Tuesday but cant while I have got that dont wanna put an extra 60bhp through it and risk doing more damage.

Balljoint is about £15 from VW and a relativly easy job if your handy. I've just today chanded the whole wishbone arm complete with TT bushes and balljoints. Hardest part is the balljoint saying that! Releasing it from the seating!

Could be ARB bushes aswell, they creak more than knock though.

I wouldn't worry about the remap, unlikely to cause anymore damage unless you caine it over potholes etc.

Ive already had 2 new lower wishbones fitted if the chances are its just a ball joint ill still get my remap done but wanna make sure it is first. My anti roll bars need doing they just rattle sometimes when going over bumps gonna get uprated ones later though. But the knocking is proper annoying.

Who did your wishbones mate. Often the wishbones are bought including the balljoints so may have been changed. I would jack the car up and visually inspect the balljoints for wear, they look old pretty quick but have a wiggle with the wheel and see if they look 'loose'

Not sure how you can check top mounts i just did mine as a matter of course when i had the coilovers fitted. Dont think there much but IIRC it means dropping the strut to fit? (someone correct me if i'm wrong)


Is it a hard knock and constant, or occasional and/or soft?

The wishbones were fitted by a garage we know they came complete with the lower ball joints because I was there when they was being fitted. Its as if somethings lefting when the suspension lifts which is why I thought it might be top mounts. Gonna get coilovers fitted and they said they will replace the top mounts at the same time. I have just pm'd Nick back so might get him to have a look and see if his got an idea what it is.

You can feel the knock through the pedals its not a constant knock just the once and sometimes when you brake which makes me think its suspension related.

Haven't had the wheels off recently?

May be worth double cheking all the wheel bolt's. Happened to me once and i couldn't figue it out, turns out they must have come a little loose!  :shocked:

Would expect it to be more frequent if it was the wheels but still worth a check!

You'll get it sorted, doesn't sound like anything to worry about  :cool:

Wheels have been off mate had 2 new wheel bearings fitted last week so its definatly not that. I reckon its top mounts but will see if Nick has an idea. Cheers mate  :cool:
