Can't Get Car Started - Firing Order?
« on: 20 February 2009, 20:14 »
My Golf just won't start. It turns over fine but just won't fire, all 4 cylinders have a spark, battery is ok and it's getting fuel. Plugs, leads and dizzy have been changed.

Now before it was running but misfiring. RAC man found a split lead and noticed the hall sensor was loose so diagnosed that, but I've changed both of these and now can't get the car started (I didn't try starting it in between changing the leads and dizzy). Now what I'm wondering is did he put the leads back on in the right order? When I changed the dizzy I followed the way the leads were, so if they're already wrong it wouldn't help. Basically, I need to know which one is number 1 cylinder. Also the Haynes book states the arm goes clockwise, but mine goes anti-clockwise?

Is the one with the blue mark (i.e nearest to camera) number one?

the rotor spins anticlockwise too, so double check that.
Take the cam belt cover off, turn it over by hand till the notch on the cam sprocket lines up with the head arrow.  take the dizzy cap off and spin it till the rotor arm is lined up with the notch on the dizzy housing.  Put spark plug lead #1 where the rotor arm is pointing.  That should be close enough for it to fire, then line the dizzy up perfect using a timing light.

Johnny you say anticlockwise so are you saying the order is anti clock wise as in
          1
        3   2
           4
