Stone chips above windscreen
« on: 06 July 2004, 11:35 »
I have a pretty tidy MK3 8v. I have noticed some quite bad stone chips on the leding edge of the roof above the windscreen.   It seems to be a poor design fault as stones bounce off the screen into the leading edge.
I read an artical a while ago in a golf mag about this problem and rember that they said that sone trim can be fitted to deflect stones, it was a non vw part, think it was a transit part or something like that.
Can anyone advise me on best course of action, or read the actical also and can help me find the trim?

I've got some pretty bad chips (turning to bad rust) just above the windscreen, although I think mine are caused by an aggressive windscreen fitter at some point. When I had my windscreen replaced a while back I had a look at the rust and it was well bad. Thankfully most of this is behind the screen and so is waterproofed by the adhesive but not a pretty site

Not sure about the part, But what you could always do to future proof is go down your local sign writers and get them to make you a "patch" of sticky plastic the exact same colour as your car and stick it on there, My local one is owned by a bunch of car modifiers so there always comming up with ideas like that, Where my bonnits pinned ive used two sticky plastic patches and you can hardly see them. Its worth a try and shouldnt cost more than ?15 ;)

Or if you cant get the vinyl to match get a really wide patch cut which can then be used as a sunscreen and can overlap over the chips....no one will ever know and you will fit in well at the next corsa/saxo meet!!!!! ;D ;D ;)

I some good ideas, I'm sure this must be very common, if you look up the line of the windscreen towards the roof, there is about a 5mm lip just right for stones to hit.. I like the future proofing idea, It could be agrivated by screen wash or rookie windscreen fitters, but it is pretty rusty up there!
think i'll have to get a stone chip = crack =new windscreen then treat the rust and get a paint job done on the leading edje.

3000 member...? must be a pretty hot site.
Cheer for your welcome and advise.

I was going to repair the rust when I had my windscreen done but the fitter was a t**t so didnt bother. Well done for being the 3000th member.....and for being brave with your sig name (if you trawl through the old posts you will find lots of banter regarding the mk3 8v and whether it is a true GTI  ::) ::) ;)

8v gti's are the original and still the best in my book, everyone to their own i say.
I had a 8v mk2  prior to this one and it was a rock, could not break it!  Sold it at 130k miles and it was still sweet.  I still see it from time to time and smile cos it still looks great.

That did not rust like the MK3!

Personally I would have a mk3 over a mk2 any day. I have heard a few stories about rust on mk3s especially under the door rubbers. thankfully with mine the only rust problems have been caused by paintwork damage as opposed to random rust, e.g top of windscreen and on my door which has been repaired before I bought it. Saying that I have had both back door hinge areas repaired under the warranty as apparently that was a common fault. In the early days they actually replaced the entire door instead of rectifying the rust....but after they realised it could get costly they simply made up a metal plate and stuck it on!!

Mk2s are just as prone to rust in certain places , just different to mk3s.
Tailgates tend to rust on mk2s, also look where the rear window heater wiring loom goes, they ALWAYS rust on mk2s.
Mk3s seem to be prone to rust around the doors.
In general all golfs don't usually rust very much, its usually down to bodged repairs.
