Bolts for exhaust........
« on: 18 February 2009, 20:56 »
Well ive brought a new 6 branch manifold for my vr as my last one cracked and i also brought a replacement decat pipe but with a flexi bit in to stop my new mani cracking, thing is the nice new shiney m10 bolts arnt long enough so i went to Wickes and got some longer ones.

On the packaging though it states that they are to be used in low stress situations......now im thinking that holding part of an exhaust system, especially manfold to cat/decat pipe is quite a stressfull place to be for a bolt with that movement and heat and all   :undecided: or am i wrong, will these bolts do the job..?

If not then wheres the best place to get some decent ones..?  bearing in mind that i need them for friday morning as thats when the car is booked in for it all to be fitted.

From memory exhaust bolts are 10.9 grade, most manifold bolts are 12.6 or 12.8, the bolts in wickes will be 8.8, I would not be happy about using them, best bet look in yellow pages for a hardware suppliers or screwfix and get them from there.

OK, you still need the correct grade though even if you use stainless steel.

Most good exhaust places should stock manifold bolts of the correct grade.

wouldn't recomend useing stainless,  stainless bolts generally dont like getting that hot,   it also work hardens, and it's slippyer than normal steel so bolts will undo themselves with vibration much easyer.

but the work hardeing is the main issue, they just get harder and harder till vibration cracks them off

all the VW's have gone bar 1.

sorted me out with some 10.9 grade M10x90 bolts, which I was struggling to find anywhere!
