ok.... Just bought a new car and it has swirls all over the paint work. Will autoglym SRP get rid of them? if not then what should i use?

It will et rid of them but its more about the method of application i.e a "dual action" polisher to really get into the swirls and rub them out...

AG SRP will "fill in" the swirls, making it look like the defects are gone. It's very good and is the best of the handpolishes.

But to remove them properly, you need to (machine) polish them.

How old is the car? Brand new? Probably inflicted by the dealer when washing to make it look presentable. They use sponge!

Best thing to do is pay for a full corrective detail. At least then you have a fantastic base to work from. There are people who've bought brand new cars and then had them detailed. The difference is remarkable to say the least.

Agreed SRP is filler heavy.
A customer of mine bought an immaculate RX8, washed it 4 times and it was as swirly as it was before the garage "removed" the swirls ready for him to buy it. He's not happy :cry:
The best route is to polish or get them polished out. Fillers are an option but only ever temporary. Budget and how much time you have will make your decision for you!

thanks for all the replys. I have only just started to get into detailing and its really addictive, but the swirls have put me off doing my new car.

Its an 07 plate golf gti, and had all the swirls on it when i got it.

So why are fillers only a temp fix?
and how much is it going to cost to get a detail done by the pros?

Fillers will only last as long as your sealer wax.

Pro detailers will charge between £3-400 for a full paint corection detail.

If you are getting into detailling, you are better off investing in a dual action polishing machine like a porter cable.

Not for a Golf! Maybe a Rolls Royce :smiley:

Fillers will get removed/reduced everytime you wash the car (unless you re-apply) and at some point you will be back to square one and need to redo it again.

I polished, sealed and waxed the car Yesterday and managed to remove most of the swirls by hand using AG SRP.  It took about 5hrs and was quite impressed with the results, however the bonnet has deeper scratches and swirls so i have decided to buy the megs G220 but have no idea what polish or pads i should use to get rid of the deffects...any ideas??

reallistically you aren't going to remove swirls by hand with SRP on VAG paint - they will return as the fillers have filled them, and as the wax gets removed, the fillers will go too.

If you are using a G220, get a Cutting pad, a couple of polishing pads, Menzerna P085 RD 3.02 and some Menzerna P085 RD Final Finish. On VAG paint you can get away with just the 3.02 on the cutting pad as it has diminishing abrasives in it - ie it starts of cutting aggressively, but ends up with very fine abrasives - and gives an excellent finish, but going over the paint again with the polishing pads and the final finish will just add a touch more gloss and help clear any trails/holograms you might get. Just remember to work small area's and work the abrasives properly. Have a look at Dave KG's guides on detailingworld.
