Oil pump failure??
« on: 17 February 2009, 17:18 »
Hi chaps,

need to venture over here from the Mk2 section for some help.  My sisters 1.4 match petrol  Mk 4 broke down today on the motorway, oil lights on, engine not working.  Wating a while then it was drivable, then broke down again.  I had a look and there were no leaks and there was oil in the engine.  My guess, the oil pump had gone. lots of tappy noises when the engine was running. I called GSF and they couldn't find an oil pump for this car.  Does it have one? silly question but I have to ask.

And what other things could it be, would the sump filter clog enough to stop the engine?  Our local mechanic had a 'look' at it and just said ' the engines gone'  not very helpful?

My sister's a nurse and cannot really afford to get a new car, so if it's a cheap fix, more the better.  She did sheepishly tell me that it was due a service 10,000 miles ago, but didnt bother.

If it is the pump, how much?, and is it an easy removal, or and engine out job??

And if the engine is gone, what else can I straight replace it with? 1.8t, diesel ??

Much thanks in advance

Jonathan.

whats the milage at?

the pump pick up is common for blocking up not sure if your sisters car would use an oil level switch or pressure switch, could be why the light didn't come on :undecided:

fear is temporary, regret lasts forever...
