Golf Paint Thickness
« on: 17 February 2009, 00:23 »
Anyone out there got a Paint Thickness Gauge

Need some independent figures as my car is finally going to my local bodyshop this week.

Following a professional detail, the paint thickness on my roof is much less than that across the rest of the car

My detailer has taken measurements with a DelFesko gauge, which reads in mills/microns and is supposed to be highly accurate (to within 0.1mls). My paint readings are measured in 'um'. The roof paint reading is almost half that of the rest of the car :shocked:and it's supposed to have been resprayed

Thanks in advance for any (quick) responses

You may get a better response on a detailing site Cass, although you may get lucky as there are a few obsessive compulsive enthusiastic cleaners on here

how 'professional' was the detail? There are detailers out there who will map out the thickness of the paint at various points around the car before starting any correctional work.

'um' = µm = micrometres or 'microns'

I'm sorry I can't be any more specific but I do recall reading a post on another forum that said basically the same thing i.e. that the paint on the roof of mkv golfs was very very thin.

You know what, I remembered something like that but then didn't know where I'd read it.

Very professional and a top detailer IMHO - web link here:

According to Paul, the paintwork thickness of my roof doesn't reflect the thickness of other VW's he's worked on. As mine has allegedly been repainted, I'm obviously a bit concerned about this. I'm discussing the implications with the VW dealer bodyshop manager tomorrow.

Thanks for the other posts and steers guy's

I have Obsessive Car Detailing OCD syndrome and yeah, I admit it,  I have a paint thickness guage   :embarassed:

Just taken some measurements for you :

My roof measurements are around 114um to 130um, with many around 114-116 in the middle

My bonnet measurements were all around 122um-144um, so a little higher, but certainly not as big a difference as yours

All my measurements are total thickness of all layers (my PTG doe'snt measure each layer)

Let me know if you want any other measurements

Hmm....reading = paint(thin) + clearcoat(thick)

Maybe they polished the clear coat down?

Cheers for the figures - my readings are as follows:

Side panels/doors/wings - all in the region of 122 - 129,
Tailgate - 122 - 128
Bonnet (which has been resprayed) is 220 - 235
Roof is only 75 - 89

Does appear that the roof may have been savagely cut to get rid of the problem, although the dealer insists it was repainted.

Been in to see the Bodyshop Manager today - have had initial discussions and sent him a copy of my paint depth report from the detailer. Will wait to see the response from dealer and VW before getting the issue finalised

Watch this space

There are some really expensive PTG's that will read the thickness of each layer - that would be conclusive evidence
