Spare key cut/fob and locking nut question
« on: 16 February 2009, 11:52 »
Hi, I've just bought another Golf, and unfortunately it has only the one key/fob. Is my only option to go to a main dealer and get another fob from them, or are there any independent guys around who can do it at a more reasonable price?

Also, you've guessed, there appears to be no locking nut for the alloys (Montreal II). Is there a standard fitting for these or are they all different?

Ta.

is it the smulti spline type? if so hit a 18mm 12 sided socket on to take them off and then replace the set

i had too get a new flip key as mine lost the coding. There £107 thats just the fob and key cut to ur ignition. Then it will need coding to your car. IIRC vw charge £75 for this. But people with vagtacho/vagcom can code them if they no what they are doing lol

You can get a replacement key for £50 off VAGproducts.co.uk and VW will have a key that you can order in to remove your nuts ;)

Cheers lads. I've been put in contact with a mobile locksmith that specialises in cars and he said he'll do the new key and fob, cut it and code it for £130. Seems reasonable enough considering the main dealer price.

See how much he'll charge to just cut it and code it. He won't charge £80 so may b cheaper to source key from VAGproducts.co.uk

My car didnt come with a locking wheel nut key either.

Hopefully your car still has the standing locking wheel nuts. VW supplied a replacement locking wheel nut key for £13. It didnt take long to work out which one i needed, as apparently there are only 6 different keys!

12 or 24 actually I think.

When I removed mine (at my mates VW workshop) and at the dealer then both had two cases which had 6 or 12 in each I can't remember. I still have the key sealed here actually as I found the old one!

The guy turned up today to do the new fob/key. He was done in literally 10 mins! A working cut key with a working fob. I couldn't believe it.
