Compression query

I did a compression test on my 8v the other day. From cyl 1-4 i got 10bar, 8bar, 9bar then 8bar again. Now these are quite noticable differences but are they still within limits for a reasonable compression level? I am suspecting my headgasket may be gone, but not sure the results are telling me what i need to know...

that seams ok to me

they say 25% but usually you will see one at about 2 - 3 bar and the rest 10 - 8 bar

is there a problem with the car ??? or were you just checking ???

Its using water at a fairly constant rate, and i cant see any leaks... :sad:

have you looked at the heater matrix ???

could be there , not common though  :tongue: :tongue: :grin:

Ah, thats interesting. No exidence of water in the car though, and i'm getting the water level warning light flashing after about 30 minutes of driving at the moment.

Seems likely, been pretty wet lately so will be hard to see any leaks. Got a gasket set including bolts for 25 quid, so price isnt an issue for doing it, just dont want the hassle if i can avoid it. Will get it in the garage and run if for a while next time i'm down.

Well i had a root about the engine today. Have found out that right enough, it has a water leak! The housing take off from the cylinder head to the heater matrix was leaking. Using the seals from the head gasket set i tried to get it sealed again, (it was stuck on with silicone when i took it off!) but it is still leaking. Turns out there is a hairline fracture in the casing along where one of the bolt holes are, which is obviously widening when i tighten it up. Is there some company that makes beefier versions? (or perhaps a different VAG car that maybe uses a steel one?) as it looks flimsy as can be... failing that i'll just get a new one from ECP in the morning...

there are ali versions about but were superceeded by the plastic ones.     plastic ones are normaly fine TBH  the metal ones have there own issues, electrolictic corrosion mainly,   thatcan cause them to leack or more often when you want it off the bolts snap

new plastic ones will do you, the ones on the car lasted nearly 20 years ;)
If you can get the alloy ones they're nice but dont go spending fortunes on them.
