iPod Prep removal
« on: 10 February 2009, 12:08 »
Hi all,

Would anyone happen to know if its possible to remove the iPod dock from the armrest and use it externally.  The reason being is that I upgraded my old iPhone to the 3G model and it won't bloody fit as its wider than the old iPhone!  I always enjoyed using the dock and am now being forced into using old school CD's
I've tried using an extension cable (a jive cable or something) but that doesn't work.
Any thoughts gratefully received.

Many thanks,  Russ

even if you would get it to fit, it wont charge it, as the VW ipod prep uses the firewire pin to charge and the new iphone 3G uses the USB pin.

I dont think it will play tunes either.

Your best bet may be using a FM receiver. Ijump or whatever they are called.

They work well and there is no noticeable loss in quality either. Maybe give your pc shop a call?

Thanks for the replies fellas.

I already have one of those, it is quite good, just a shame I have to use it when I have the iPod prep in the armrest already!

Oh well, looks like I'm just going to have to take my screwdriver to the armrest and see what I can do!  :undecided:

You could keep the old iphone or an old ipod just for the GTi? I'm pretty sure you can sync two ipods to one copy of itunes so you could just take it out of the car occasionally to sync it?

Thats what I was going to do when I upgrade to an iphone

Yeah that would be a good idea, however, I found out last night (for anybody who is interested), that if you remove the tray in the armrest that houses the dock at the bottom, for some reason, you can then plug your 3G into it (while its removed) and then slot the whole thing back into the armrest, and it fits & works!
To remove, just put a flat ended screwdriver down the back of the the section you slot your iPod into, which will loosen the two glue spots that hold it in place, then you can pull that section out (the dock is not 'plugged' in, it connects into a circuit board via a few gold prongs).  It takes a bit of getting out the first time, but once its out and loose it comes out and goes back in as easy as your iPod.  Then for some reason the 3G fits in.

Yeah tunes work fine, just like a normal iPod, I know it won't charge but I charge my phone up every night anyway, so makes no difference to me.
