Splitting headlights.
« on: 08 February 2009, 18:05 »
I've had a set of crosshairs, which I bought off Ebay for over a year now. I'm going to try and get them fitted for the Summer. Obviously, I'm going to have to split the lens off the headlight to silicone them in. How do I go about it? Has anyone done this? Or even better, fitted these DIY crosshairs to standard heads????

Chuck them in the oven for a bit till they are too hot to touch, then use oven gloves to get them out and using a straight flat edge, prise the glass off. try not to twist the edge as it will break the glass. Work evenly around the light or it will break.

use high temp gasket to hold it in as that won't melt.

If your headlamps are old, then you shouldn't have any problems getting them off! gently warm them with a hot air gun, till they get very hot, the lenses should gently prize off with something wooden or plastic, avoid metal, as this is more likely to chip the glass, before refitting, soak the lens and reflector in hot water and strong bleach solution for several hours, this will leave them looking like brand new when reassembled, use white silicon when you put them back together, for an OE look
