Mk3 Hydraulic Tappets
« on: 30 June 2004, 20:22 »
Hi guys - looks like one or more of the ol hydraulic tappets needs replacing on me Mk3 2.0 8v.  I've tried the oil flush, filter replacement and good quality oil, but to no effect - they are still noisy.

Rather than risk a failure, which would be BAD, can any helpful folks out there recommend the best place to purchase replacements and a rough idea of how much they'd cost?

If anyone also has some advice/tips or tricks on replacing the tappets, then that would be great.  Haynes manuals have really gone down-hill over the past few years, so any advice from someone who's been there and done that would be welcome.  Perhaps we should start a new forum/web site section where folks can post any tips/tricks/proceedures/guides?  I'll hopefully get some pictures and put a guide together when I've got the new tappets.

Thanks guys,

Dobbs.

i never heard of them failling! there just solid bits on metal which wear in time and get noisy!

depending on mileage they do get noisey..... but if left no harm will be done!

i have 205000 miles on my 8v mk 2 gti and ive never replaced the tappets....... they are abit noisey but nowhere near as noisey as the fords! ;D

they can be replaced with head still on just take the rocker cover off and take the cam out and remove them all!

if you need to do valve oil seals then either the heads got to come off or you need an air compressor which connects the the spark plug hoes!! and a valve compresser to do them with the head still on...... to do the valve guides the head has to come off!

if the engines not smoking not burning oil and runs ok and the slight tappet noise bothers you just replace the tappets.... if it starting to smoke and or your burning alot of oil over 1 litre per 1000km then get a compresion test done to see if bottom end is sound......
if it is just replace the valve seals at the same time as your replacing the tappets..........

Hey guys - many thanks for all your advice.

I'm planning on replacing the timing belt soon, so I'll budget for a set of replacement tappets and do both at the same time.

Thanks again,

Dobbs.
