wheels rubbing
« on: 07 February 2009, 21:09 »
got some bmw alloys for the mk2 think there mims, there 15 inch with 195 50 15 tyres there scrubbibng bad on the back, the cars lowerd not sure how much tho, they only catch slightly on the front over bumps, if i put standard srpings on the back they wont catch the arch and will raise the front slightly, but will it completely mess the handling?
thanks lee

Im no expert, but i do think it would upset the handling a bit... as in added rear body roll. Sounds like the wheels could do with 45 profile rubber to go with your current drop, which from what you said sounds like a 55/60mm drop. What kind of mk2 you got?

its an 89 8v gti, found out the wheels are 15x7 with et of 18, mims 1900 as seen here

 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&item=120335604015

would a 45 tyre make a big difference as they are scrubbing bad, i may try some 40 mm springs as it wont effect the handling as much as retain the lowered look.

You have a couple of options.. you can raise the car again, get the arches rolled, try tyres with a profile of 45 and/or a narrower width or.... swap them with me for some MIM 1000's with a higher offset(wont scrub). Sorry always wanted a set of those rims!!

think you problem is the offset ideally you want it around et35. 45 might help just don't let your hates get in the back

heh those in the auction are the ones I bought, fit nice as the offset more suited to a VW.  I think you have the same ones as I have on my MK2 which I also bought off ebay a few months earlier, these have an offset of 13
Fronts I hammered the front arches in and cut out the inner lips oin the trims, at the back I'll need to get the trims off and abuse the arches, But I think I'm going to take them off and put them on my girlfiends ibiza as it looks liek it has loads more arch room.

If yours are offset 18, you may be able to get away with a different set of tires, I had rubbing with my TSW omegas + spacers which ended up at ET18. Got some Falken ZE512s fitted and that gave me much more clearance as they have a more tucked in tyre profile :)

yea there the same as yours, iv rolled the lip on the front, need to cut the trim and refit it, also need to do the same on the rear, but may leave all the arch and side trims off cos its gettin resprayed and think it will look better.
