MK3 - 1.4>>>GTI differences
« on: 07 February 2009, 19:21 »
ok, so im going to get some brake parts tomorrow from a gti to get some bigger brakes on my 1.4. but while im stripping them off the gti, is there any other parts that are worth taking that are different to my 1.4?

i heard that the gti had bigger wishbones, is this true? as im putting in a 1.8t, i want to try and reduce torque steer as much as possible, so every little will help!!

any other parts worth having?

thanks!

LL ;)

You've probably sussed it already, put you'll be needing all the tank and hoses, plus all the ABS and ABS control unit ect.

What you need is an insurance quote (for a reality check), to place a classified ad (or two) to unload your current shed and then a budget to go out and buy a better starting base.

Like maybe a G3 16V GTI.

Then you could spend some time learning to drive with 150-170bhp, rather than launching yourself on a probably badly-set-up (on £150 pogo-sticks), poorly assembled, over-powered hedge-seeking missile.

I know it sounds harsh (as normal), but it's your first project, isn't it?  Going for a 20VT conversion at 19, straight from a 1.4 wet-blanket seems like a large and foolish step and a way of damaging both your health and your bank balance in one almighty tree-shaped BANG.
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

i can't bring myself to agree with DH but i know what he's saying!! (I RS turbo'd my xr3 at 19 and my insurance was stuuuuupid but with 200bhp it was nearly worth it  :undecided: )

But the gti has bigger anti roll bars, larger wishbones, improved steering rack and master cyl.

brake wise....I would use the earlier gti set up and you'll need the brake bias control valve fitting to yours (later models have this built into the elctronics of the abs and is essential!!). the brake pipes are diffeent as earlier one's use 6 lines compared to the 4 your car has!!

insurance and power, etc all that isnt a worry.

i thought about getting a gti save the hassle, but it gives me something to do lol. each to there own

reality check sounds about right, but im ambitious

although i have been playing with the idea of getting a mk2 gti 8v to thrash around while i do the mk3 1.8t project and wait to insure/put it on the road in November, when renewal comes around. sounds a bit more sensible and it gives me a lot of time to work on it, but then again its time left waiting........

thanks for your advice, tis much appreciated!

the thing with the 16v is,   to put a 20vt in  you are going to be fitting a hell of a lot of 16v  parts,    mostly drivetrain realted  but still quite a few of them.   to fit a 20v into a 16v     much more straight forward   the challenge is still there just not quite so much boreing shizzel
all the VW's have gone bar 1.

Collecting parts you could already have does suck Satan's c*ck and is a considerable waste of time - starting with the right base really is a much better idea and will save you time, reduce insurance headaches and give you a sounder end result.

I should know, I've been there myself.

Why not buy a shed G3 16V and shonk about in that while you dig your 1.4 hole deeper?  At least that way you'd find out what you *could* already have.

yeah thing is i already got a load of 16v parts, and dont really have a place to strip down another car :(

you are all right about the 16v base thing and i kick myself a lot for not doing more research before heading into things like this. i just dont seem to learn, i do it a lot!!

what is most likely to happen is i will start with the conversion, and realise i am missing parts which i thought i didnt need/didnt know about and have to take it off the road. i love it though when theres a lot to do and if comes to it, due to ball-ache-ness, i'll have to garage while i work on it and grab a cheap runner for while, like a gti.

thanks again.
