Check your control panel 1st! I had this same problem and it was the control panel switch, £4.99 off ebay.  You can check it by removing the control panel and bridging the spad wires on the back.

If it does turn out to be the resistors, then you can just replace them without changing the whole motor. Ebay again:-

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VW-GOLF-MK2-GTI-HEATER-MOTOR-RESISTOR-C392_W0QQitemZ190283139067QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item190283139067&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1701%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318

You do have to remove the motor though to change the resistors. Its in the passenger foot well above the undertray. You can remove it without removing the under tray though. There is a tab on the motor near the back and you need to lift this up and rotate the motor. It then just drops out.

Sounds like mine, sometimes its a superpowered jet, other times its a squeaking sniff. I sort of fixed mine, by dousing the armature bearing with GT85 through the connector hole. It works like new for about 2 months after doing this, then because of the moisture it dries up again.

A new fan doesn't help as it just seems to 'dry up' over time for me.
