Bee sting aeriel is very rare on an 8v - I think it was an option only (and probably a relatively expensive one). That red and black interior is an 8v interior IIRC, I think the rainbow was only standard for the 8v on the very last run-out models or something like that.

Well, I think its too much money for an 8v and if you ever want to sell it, you'ill never get anywhere near that...  As for 150k ones are as good as 70k ones, there might be exceptional 150k ones for which that statement is true, but in all probability a lower mileage car will be better... this is speaking from personal experience of buying and selling Mk2s - not as a trader, but a collector.  I have had around 15 Mk2's over the past 4 years and general rule of thumb is, a lower mileage example (below 95k) is nearly always better than a higher mileage one (over 130k).  Don't forget its easy to polish a car and make it look good.  I've seen plenty of 8v's  in the past 2 months with less than 95k miles for similar or even less money.

thanks for the input so far ppl, i also trawl the t'internet for mk2's & vr6's, piston heads seems ridiculously expensive and makes me think that £1500 is reasonable, if its solid enough, i will sell my mk3 despite it being a tank thats never let me down,

ive got zender & hella rear spoilers waiting, & a whole new carpet and boot turrets, and either quad single or jetta front end, depending

hope i can get it down to £1200

An example of what you can get if you wait around... this car was reduced to £1400 in Club GTI as he couldn't get much interest when on sale in December

Sorry mate, but I really think you're getting ripped off.... probably because you're in Scotland and the garage knows that most decent examples are down South and far away.  A guy on the Mk5 section had a similar issue trying to part-ex his Mk5 GTI for a Mk5 R32 up in Sctoland - the dealer was asking for way more than similar examples in the UK and wouldn't budge even after 2-3 months!

Loads of good advice here but I think you have to go with your heart sometimes if you are going to spend days and days viewing mk 2s when you should be driving take the best one on the day and enjoy your lot. Sure we can all haggle whether for £2000 you get a better car than £1500. but there are far to many variables. We have to take risks. If you can wait wait but if time is precious and you like getting your hands dirty go for it.  It does not take long to end up spending £500 evening if you carry out the work yourself. If you like it bag it and enjoy it. In my opinion body is vital. mechs repair cheaply on these cars.

Do you know what those 5 spoke alloys are called and what size tyres should be fitted to them. I have them on my crap looking 5 door and am just about to replace all corners current fitment is 205/50.
Regards
Will
