It's a good engine.  Keep it above 4000rpm and it's loads of fun (for the 16 miles before the petrol runs out ;))

You could even enjoy a VR6 without ever using more than 4,000 rpm.

Sounds great too.

stage1 is 277bhp for almost 3k

kind of goes round in circles this ;)

one minute big bhp 20v turbo engines are suggested as being unreliable, next minute it's bolt a big turbo on a vr6

one minute it's lightweight mk2 16v beats everything, next it's put a heavy vr6 in one

:)

you dont really need a turbo'd lump in a small car. a supercharger works well on lightweight cars but personally i think 2.0l 16v on twin carbs for mk1 and 2 ;)

eack to their own i suppose, thats why the vw tuning scene is so good ;D

yeh,

each to there own man.
vr6 is the most interesting engine that vw have done,
took some balls back in 1992 to put a 2.8 litre engine in a hatchback IMO.

to mate a vr6 with the best golf that vw ever did aka the mk2 is a match made in heaven.

its bollox what people say about vr6 engines bing too heavy for a mk2, as long as your chassis is sorted you will be fine.
its not like your gonna use it on a f**kin track every day is it? ;)

New VR6s are aluminium so they are not as heavy.  Get one of these in a mk2.  That's my advice.

you can put in whatever engine you want at the end of the day, but over about 180-200bhp your gonna have traction problems in a small fwd car.

Tuning any road spec engine to extreme can result in reliability problems.
With the newer cars, a mk4 v6 is a good buy and very tunable, and also has the benefit of 4 wheel drive.

Also to add, using a bigger capacity engine will always be better for tuning, as a bigger engine will always be less stressed than smaller one.

I read a review of a smart roadster recently (bare with me). The reviewer said it was the best sports car he has driven for years.  His opinion was based on the fact that it was fun to drive and you could use every single bit of the cars performance whilst driving on public roads.

I think this is a good point.  Is it better to have a standard mk2 golf that you can use to it's full potential and really enjoy or to spend thousands on making it increadibly fast and difficult to drive properly and consequently losing most of the day to day fun of the original car?

Obviously it's all down to what you want from a car and what result you can get from tuning.
