what's underneath my rear number plate?
« on: 01 February 2009, 12:04 »
I'm thinking of getting legal pressed plates front and rear. Only, my current rear plate is stuck on (very well).

Does anyone know if there are screw holes underneath already? so I can get a plate surround, rather than having to stick a new plate on or drill my own holes?

cheers

Yeah, there are screw holes pressed into the tailgate.

I like to screw my plates on so that I can take them off to clean behind. I put a little bit of copper grease on the screw before winding them in.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

There is a chance that some screws have been snapped off previously in the holes hence why the plate is stuck on

there should be 2 square holes with a plastic bung pushed in, this is what the plate is screwed to.  chances are if yours is stuck on there  wont be any holes left! if you remove the plastic trim on the inside of the talgate you can check the condition of the holes without having to remove the plate :)

In answer to your question, rust most likely, aerodynamics of Mk2 make it suck crap/water onto the rear end and rust likes to live behinde the plate and in the plate light holders. But as RJ says you can check this by taking the plastic bit of trim off inside of boot, careful not break the plastic tabs though as if it starts rattling it'll drive you nuts and are a pain to replace trims as people tend to chuck them. Not to say you could'nt fab up your own one but it's not exactly OEM...

You don't own a Mk2, you support it.
