my brother has just bought a 1.6 cl and wants to drop a 2.0 8v motor into her, is it as easy as just taking 1 engine out and dropping the other  in or is their more to it? All help would be appreciated thanks Andy!

you need the engine. gear box. driveshafts. ecu (and signal reciever and key if post 95). rad. engine wiring loom and you'll also need to sort the brakes (as 239mm solid discs will be scary). and i would advise sorting some suspension out too

cheers boney, new their was more to it than just swapping engines, will be on the look out for a full 8v car to do the project with, must be able to get 1 fairly cheap some wher lol

thats what dubbing is all about, some of us like to tinker and some dont (you) and it wouldnt be clean gti I would be taking the parts off it would be 1 that has been written off or scrapped

It is worth bearing in mind that when you have finished, you will need a engineers report and your insurance will a lot more than a factory Gti, I don't see the point in it myself unless you were going for a 16V.

...i like to tinker.. eg change service parts but putting a gti engine (and an 8v at that???) into a cl/gl shell isnt tinkering its pretty full on not too mention like flushing money down the bog as it will be worth less than a normal one and also more expensive to insure.

Just do it if you wanna mate! Shep is talkin sensible, but I know how sometimes people get attached to their cars and sensible goes straight out the window! I love my car and would rather stick a new powerhouse in it than upgrade to a newer car! Good luck with the conversion but I personally would go for somethin a little more exciting than an 8v lump!

go for it m8!! but defo put in something different than an 8v lump.

if ya dont think its a good plan to put a better engine into a cl/gl shell, then you just dont undetstand and no matter how much its explained, you just wont understand. its all about the learning experience and the FUN!!! ohh and not to mention the finished project!!!!  the money, insurance and blah, blah is just the price you have to pay. if ya cant live with the price, you just dnt love it enough LOL!!!! or you have some sense :laugh:
