Hmmm, food for thought i suppose  :undecided: i took a good look under the bonnet the other day and there seems to be a fair amount of room tbh, i dont need the box right out, just on the floor.

I could do it at work on ramps, but if i didnt finish it in a day i would be abit stuck...

Think i shall wait for the weather to warm up a little and just rip in to it, as suggested the most difficult thing when doing this kind of job on stands is getting the box back in imho.

As and when i do it i shall let you all know how it goes

vw told me £1200 to replace the chain but would do it for £600 all in as they dont get that many n would be good for the mechanics to do one

Lol, half price as the techs might learn something

I havent done much to mine....the weather has somewhat put me off, but i did go out for an hour the other day and removed the top half of the inlet manifold and the rocker cover... just to shine a torch on to the upper chain guide.

And, there is a small amount of damage to it, where the lower bolt holds the guide rail to the block, there is a small chunk of plastic missing, its whizzed around the chain and wedged itself right at the front under the guide rail.

So rather than putting it back together i have left it as it is, perhaps it will spur me on to get it done quicker

For those of you who are even remotely interested... i did a little bit more at the weekend...

I removed the upper timeing chain cover, timed up the engine and removed the upper guide rail.

On a peculier note, with the top timed up the bottem was out by almost a centimeter out  i could turn the crank back to get it in time but that shows a huge amount of slack in the chains .....

Anyways, a few more pics to show the damage to the upper guide rail.

I took the gerbox out of my gti today and that was a proper ball ache. Ended up taking engine out then splitting on the ground as getting really annoying in such as small are. The first time i've done it though and didn't have the correct spline socket to remove drive shafts so dropped sub frame to  . Must buy more tools!!!

I went out and bought a rail of spline sockets for that purpose  i have had a few boxes out of a few cars on the drive, and countless more at work with ramps.... i give another update over the weekend

Thanx for posting this up. Well done for doing it yourself too. We now have proof you dont have to take the engine out to do the timing chain. Did you not need an engine hoist or similar? or was that block under the sump enough to support it?

No hoist  just a jack and block under the sump and another jack under the box, the only real headache is getting the box out as the pasanger side output flange gets wedged on the flywheel as you try to remove it.... just takes a bit of fiddleing to get it out.

Tell you what, i could not justify paying £1200.00 to get this job done, the car is hardly worth that.

Should be done by sunday
