if you undo the rack and push it forward that would help, but droppin the subby would be easier.

what it might be is a 16v zaust fitted on an 8v, that could also explain the problem.  you can tell if its a 16v downpipe simply by looking at it, if it has a big round box on it then its 16v, if not its 8v (or a modded 16v )

heres an early 8v gti/carb 'toilet bowl' downpipe:

late 8v gti looks liek the above but it has a 6 nut flange, and a 16v one looks like an 8v one but with a big round box just before the end :)

Have had a proper good look at whats going on now... It is a 16v system on to an 8v downpipe, hence the bodge! Its a Supersprint centre and rear section and original downpipe and manifold.

Seems a shame to rip of the 16v bits (which are in good nick) and replace. Is it not possible to get an adapter of some description to reduce the bore to the correct size for the downpipe?

If not it looks like i will have a 16v system for sale  :undecided:

yeah what you need is a 2" -> 2.25" adaptor.  if yoyu can find one miltec front silencer for an 8v is 2." at the front and 2.25" at the back, or at least the one my mate bought was.  Basically the rear silencer & back box are the same on the 8v and 16v systems, they just supply a different front one to reduce the bore.
