Dreaded ABS light

Hi all

I took a few days off work to replace all discs and pads on my 16v and fronts went ok. everything was a bit ceased up but GOD I did the back ones yesterday and never again for both sides it took me 8hours  (due to all 8mm hex screws buggering up) Anyway I went by the guide on  the forum to change em over (very good by the way) but I would defo leave this job to a garage next time.

The thing is since I replaced the rears the ABS light wont go out on my dash. I’ve just read the thread on here to disconnect my battery for 30mins or so to reset just before I posted this up to see if that will do the trick. I did do everything by the book and didn’t forget the ABS rings.

Do I need to take this to VW to get it reset can anyone advise what they did to make the ABS light go out.

clear the fault(s) with vagcom if the reset doesnt work, although i think this will be the same as battery disconnect.

and i dont have a vagcom 

my girlfriend needs picking up later as well hope its ok to drive it

you havent taken the abs pick up rings off the old discs, have you kept them?..
you need to take the new discs back off and take the pick up rings from the old discs and put them onto the new ones..
then the light will go out, but you still want to clear the codes really(for future diagnosis reasons), though it wont affect the abs if you dont.

jamie i did do everything it said. i removed the old ABS rings and put them on the new discs as well. (clean em up first mind) but they went on fine.

so looks like a reset then  do you think i should drive it?

anyone have a vagcom? i'm near nottingham and will offer money to reset it..

£20 anyone? = i'd drive to you

i know i'm replying to myself. but after searching this problem on the net it seems most people have said if the abs light stays on you should give the new pads time to bed in.

not sure if this is true but my brakes seem fine at the moment

ok new parts so far (new ABS rings fitted today)

still not cured the problem abs light still showing.

new sensors ordered for the rear as the vagcom was picking up left and right failed.
the guy said to try new rings first to try save a bit of money but thinking about it now should have just fitted new senors anyway (so much messing around)

will keep everyone posted.

did vag com say left and right "mechanical fail"? if thats the case then its most likely still something to do with the rings. you want to make sure theyre fitted flush..
could be te sensors though.. are they plugged in??.
oh, and its fine to drive, it will be just like a normal car with no abs.

Did you let a hammer anywhere near them when doing your hubs?  Just a thought as sufficient bang will de-magnetize them causing them to fail.
