Everything has it's price ... you can always make him a lowish offer and let him think about it
You could then check out the car history etc.
I have bought quite a few imports and would'nt worry too much about this as long as the car is in good overall condition, full VW service history and to UK spec (check it has a spare wheel and not puncture repair kit

). In a years time the import tag won't really matter as even a 2006 UK car would be out of warranty then. There is no problem insuring European imports which are to full UK spec.
My only niggling doubts would be how good the 3rd party warranty is, in particular with repect to the DSG, which are'nt cheap to repair / replace.
