New car advice ( MK4 1.9 GT TDI )

Guys, i was on here a while back and so close to buying a mk2 golf, insurance would of killed me so i ended up with an 2006 Fiat Grande punto 1.4 8v...dont get me started, it doesnt look too bad and the interior is quite nice, but the build quality on it is about the same as a packet of salt and vinegar, so i want shut of it.

I originally set my heart on a Audi A3 1.9TDI but have since been swayed over to the Golf MK4 1.9 GT TDI 130, is this a good car ? insurance on the GT TDI is only £80 more, comes to £900 for me and the mrs ( both 21 ) fully comp with some extras on it so insurance is quite nice and easily affordable.

We think we can get around £4500 for our Grande Punto in the condition its in with the milage/history etc so will be looking to spend around that on a Golf.

Is there any information or praises/negatives you can give about the MK4 1.9 GT TDI ? What sort of milage are they good for, i know the engines are bomb proof but most ive looked at are around 100k miles. Whats this chipping business ive seen, something about getting a custom ECU and having it remapped to 170bhp? I think thats trying to run before i can walk, i think 130bhp is more than enough for us as we both ride motorcycles for our thrills.

regarding the remap, Rhyso was a GT TDI 130 (remapped) and he swears by it, the only problem is, the standard clutch isn't able to cope with the extra torque, so expect to have to change the clutch if you do get it re-mapped.

with the current economic climate, you should be able to pick up a pretty good TDI for £4500, but TBH i doubt you would get that much for your punto

Will have a read through that, and i thought the clutch might have problem.

And taking into consideration the current times we are living in ive seen a few puntos of my year go for that cash, its still under manufacturers waranty, 20k on the clock, FSH, nearly mint condition, new tyres etc. Meh heres to hoping eh ! Theres quite a nice GT TDI going for under £4k too, 70k miles.

as Ridg says i own a 130 TDI and have had it mapped for approx the last 10K miles with the only major problem being the clutch which sadly at approx £900 for clutch, flywheel and fitting is NOT cheap but i haven't had a hint of clutch slip since

oh and i also easily see 50mpg even with the remap

not a clue tbh - i'm hoping the life of the car; only real worry is the flywheel as its now the weakest part

Have you finished your car yet ? that interior looks really nice btw, ive always wanted a golf ( all be it a mk2 ) but i think a mk4 would suit me more, maybe when im older and not doing as many miles il restore a mk2 :p

yeah i did - got it re-remapped by Nick!! the Custom Code map only amplified the original VW map which had a flat spot built in

absolutely flies with the R-Tech map - as a few members will testament to
