R32 brake upgrade - fluid /lines?
« on: 25 January 2009, 23:16 »
Just a question to those who have upgraded to the R32 setup..

Did you change the brake fluid to a higher spec?
Did you swap the brake lines or stuck with OEM rubber lines?

one last one...
Anyone actually got the rears fitted ?

Ta.

With regards to the rears and the eternal question, "how do you fit them?", after doing a fair bit of research on the net I believe these MIGHT well be a direct bolt on and don't need any custom adaptors etc.  This is based on a thread on a US forum (can't remember which) and the upgrade kit details on the Autotech website.

http://www.autotech.com/prod_brakes_rrbrakeconv.htm

The Autotech kit is obviously using components from another VAG car (not blue) so in therory the only items that could be different in my mind are the carriers.  And if they are its just a case of finding out!

Think you need R32 lines for the fronts, not sure about the back.

Got the lines and rear splash guard, might get a new set of front splash guards then I think thats the lot.

Although I need to get them apart to paint now ...

According to Autotech you can use your existing rear splash guards.  But this may be based on bending them clear of the bigger discs.  If you're going for new splash guards I'm assuming this would require removal of the hub etc and would require new bolts and wheel bearings which would be renewed?

As it stands I have Mk5 R32 brakes front and rear sitting in my garage but no Mk5!!!   Bought the brakes last year on the assumption I'd be getting a Mk5.

As you have the parts (and car) a quick trial fit before painting would be great if you have the time.  Just whip the caliper/carrier/disc out the way and see how the R stuff fits.  A nice 2 hour job for a weekend afternoon!?!

Splash guards I understand are just screwed in place, I got new rear one's in the 'kit' I purchased.  The US guy states the screw on with 3 screws but on the GTI you can only use 2 of them but its firmly attached.

In the middle of building work at the mo so no room at home, I'll try and get them sorted elsewhere though as soon as poss.

If you do go ahead with it any time soon a "how to" thread with plenty of photos would be just the ticket!

Let me know how you get on.  When I do get my Mk5 (any time now) I intend to get the R brakes on and knowing how much work is required would be half the battle!

Just a question to those who have upgraded to the R32 setup..

Did you change the brake fluid to a higher spec?

Do NOT use any fluid that is not "ESP" rated.  That rules out every DOT 5 or DOT 5.1 fluid.  The genuine VW DOT 4 fluid is perfectly fine, and is actually so good, it out-performs many so called 5.1 fluids.

And if your car is a 2008 model year (10th digit of the VIN) or newer, then the warranty states that ONLY fluid to VW 501.14 specification can be used.

Did you swap the brake lines or stuck with OEM rubber lines?

No need for braided lines - the OEM lines are perfectly adequate.

Me too would like to know this!

Good info TT, going to stick with the OEM lines and fluid - afterall it was only changed recently anyway.

Hopefully I will have the answer to the rear setup soon...
