Few Problems
« on: 25 January 2009, 20:25 »

Alright, Have had my mk2 Gti 16v now for a few months, generally a great car / drive, just a few issues im trying to fix this week.

One problem im yet to sort, is the car is killing fan belts :(, keeps wearing then slips, you adjust the tension, then again same problem until you have run out of travel on the rack :(
Mainly on long journey, when only doing 25 miles each way to work, is fine. but do 160miles in one hit then is problem.
I thinking it could be a bearing on one of the pulleys ?. Im getting a new alternator, and pulley, new rack, and star bolt (as the current one has lost teeth etc) then try again.
The belt is all running true (not out of alignment).

The belt size should be 950mm, but when new is already towards in of adjustment travel - is this wrong ??
i have the new belt and alternator pulley and the belt is flush fitting around the pulley. but the one on the car at the moment the belts pulls into the pulley a lot more. (so maybe worn ??

Could you think of anything else that can do this to belt ?

Also it has debadged grill, but this lets in lots of water. I drove on the motorway and when i checked the alternator and air box, fuel metering system were soaked :(. this is not helping. can you get a cover for this ?? if not i will try making something.

also the bonnet will not lock in position anymore, you have to slide it by hand. looks like the spring has broken on the bonnet catch. Can you buy the spring seperate or new bonnet catch.

hope the above makes sense lol, im new to golfs
cheers Evan

You could try roughing up the pulleys a bit with some emery cloth and see if that helps, also make sure you have the belt guard on there

You will also have to replace the bottom half of the bonnet catch as the spring isnt available seperately

have a carefull look at the pullys  and check it dosent have an 8 valve  cranckshaft pully on it.   it s a difrent offset to the 16v  and will push the belts out of line so they nolonger run true, causeing it to trash belts
all the VW's have gone bar 1.

I bought a box of varied springs from Halfords and fixed mine. Its not brilliant, but it works.

it secures to the bottom of the drivers chassis leg, i think they are obsolete from vw now so yor best bet would be to find one off a breaker
