If I cut this off what problems do I cause....
« on: 25 January 2009, 12:17 »
Rite folks,

Let me start with.....I F*@!$** HATE the heater matrix!!!

I'm trying to get the two bolts off engine side and its not happening....if i cut them off will I need a whole new air box or can I just replace the two bolts? I'm assuming they are threaded at both ends....one end goes into the heater matrix and the other comes through the bulkhead?

Another question I have: Should I ever get to the stage of replacing the matrix is it fine to just get rid of the pressure release valve as it's the newer matrix?

Cheers

Phill

yeah they're studs, you can unscrew em from matrix & replace:
191 819 056 - double stud - 1.97+VAT
N   905 748 01 - hex nut with double washer - 0.76+VAT

yes

all the newer matrix's are mk3 versions which apparently dont blow up.

mine is fitted with no valve and is absolutely fine. the valve is another thing to go wrong.

I don't think a semi will give the same results

Cool, thanks very much.

To totally drain the coolant do I need to remove the thermostat? I.e to drain the block?

Am flushing the system while I'm at it

Don't worry about cutting those studs off - infact, its better you do if its stiff that try to turn them and remove them.

When I removed my heater matrix, the bottom stud was stuck fast too. Because I kept turning it, it just ate up the plastic on the reverse - which meant a new stud wouldn't screw in either.

You'll see it better in that photo, a big spanner will take them off, its a tight bolt thread on the outside and a wide screw into the plastic.

I ended up using no more nails on mine to glue it back into the airbox to stop it from spinning. But even if you don't bother, the fresh air box is held in pretty solid just from the vents etc. around it!
