Mayonnaise central!
« on: 24 January 2009, 20:18 »
Hey guys and girls! It looks like I've got some major problems by the looks of things!

The car starts and runs fine. I've had no engine problems whatsoever. The only thing that's happened thats water related was when I didn't put antifreeze in a while back - but I've driven about 2000 miles since then and only just noticed this contamination now.

I did an oil change about 400 miles ago, with Forté oil flush, there was no white whatsoever in the oil.

I checked the breather pipes and the one from the airbox had the same white crap in it, and the breather to the throttle housing was blocked with black crud. I did notice my air filter was damp to the touch - but theres no holes in the airbox and the rest of the engine bay is quite dry?

It seems like a hell of a lot to be condensation. My expansion tank is clean water, no contamination. The engine does use oil (which I think is the stem seals) and I had to top up the water by 1L the other day - which could have been an airlock from when I did the heater matrix.

I compression tested the block and have an even 13.5 Bar on all 4 cyl.

Could it be the HG without any HG related symptoms - loss of performance, low compression etc.

Change the oil, take it out for a blast and see what happens - you may find something peculiar happened during your recent 'deep freeze' episode and that the car's recovered and is none the worse.

Compression test when hot or cold?
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

DH - oil was changed 400 miles ago with a flush (1 week ago). Freezing was 2000 miles ago. There was no white in the oil that came out. There was no white on the rocker baffle either, only on the inner rocker cover.

Compression test was when it was cold.

Get it hot and re-test it.  You may find things change then.  There could well be a crack in the head that only opens when the engine is hot.

Meh, just bin the whole thing and fit an ABF motor - let's face it, it's going to happen sooner or later.

I'm just overhauling the tappets right now. So in the morning when I reassemble - I get her started and compression test the head.

I'm fitting a new rocker cover gasket and I'l dry out the air filter and I'll clean out the blocked pipes.

If you have no other running issues with the car, then I would not worry about that too much. If the car has been used for frequent short trips, you will get that kind of crap in any car. Clean it all out then go for a long blast. 100+miles. Changing the oil is not a bad idea, but any more moisture in the oil system should vapour away with a good run.
If you still get that sauce afterwards, then D.H's advice is good advice. He even has a recently aquired engine he may sell you! But don't pay too much for it! :lipsrsealed:

No way he'd part ways with that engine - plus, I couldn't quite budget the insurance on an ABF at the minute! All in due time.

Might be worth saying,

The engine internals themself have no white gunk on them at all.

Lets just put it down to condensation then ;)
