Yay, I've finally got a GTD
« on: 24 January 2009, 19:55 »
Hi

Just thought I would share with you that i've just bought a GTD. Have wanted one for so long but just couldn't find them or they were too far away. Anyway not sure if any of you saw it but I bought a red one off ebay yesterday and it is a great car.
I drove it back from Sussex to Devon and the fuel economy is great, not to mention the engine absolutly perfect.
Just been looking at it, its even got the original genuine undertray on it, which I have never seen in a golf, also the intercooler setup is complete which is nice.

Anyway enough bigging it up, I got a few questions i wondered if anyone could answer.

Firstly it has a crunch into second which does occur most of the time unless i actually am very careful with it. Will this definately be the box or could it be cause by something else. I know the gearbox oil was changed this time last year but i'm not sure what they put in.

Secondly i'm pretty sure the front mount needs changing, as if I boot it from a roundabout in second it feels as if the engine moves a little too much, i'm pretty sure its a hydraulic mount. Are the GSF ones good enough quality or would people recommend a genuine one.

And finally, it doesn't have central locking, I have the factory fitted system in my Golf Driver which works fine. Is it worth finding a genuine system or should I buy ebay kits, can anyone recommend them?

Sorry for the long post, but you know how it is with a new (secondhand ) car, especially golfs

Thanks
Will

P.s. will upload some pics soonish

1. common problem im afraid, redline mtl may help but if its too far gone you need a box rebuild or a 2nd hand replacement!  in fact the one of your driver may be the same code?

2. easy 30 minute job/  loosen the top nut and the 2 lower bolts, jack it up till the engine lifts off the mount, remove the nut & bolts then jack it up till you have enough room to swap the mount out.  Then refittin reverse o removal

3. personally id go for a universal remote central locking kit off ebay, dirt cheap and easy to fit :)

These are cool cars, I have one. They are a pain but are'nt all old golfs.

Has your got the intercooler located on the top of the engine?

Now hoick the engine out and put an AAZ in with your injectors, turbo and boost pin.  This will rich-up the mixture on the AAZ when it's on-boost giving you a very worthwhile increase in power output.  The AAZ also has a much more linear torque delivery and uses a more substantial headgasket that will resist failure and tolerate abuse far better than the RB/SA motor.

Thanks rub jonny, thats really helpful, think i'll keep an eye out for one of the those locking kits. Is there usually a set price for a gearbox rebuild or does it depend on the state of the box. Anyone have a rough estimate?

Yes it has the top mounted intercooler, which to my surprise is complete, even the little slats next to the light bulb.

Diamond Hell, i'd like to increase the power but insurance is a problem for me being 19. The GTD will be quite steep as standard so i hate to think what they would quote if it was modified with a 1.9. Thanks for the info though. I'm sure this is a long term car so i'm sure the time will come when I decide to do the conversion.
Also i've been reading the AAZ head gasket can be used on the 1.6 motors with hydraulic tappets. Anyone know this for certain, or would I have to mod the head?

a gtd should have central locking - perhaps you have a fault

The 1.6 diesel motor is not very strong at all.  I wouldn't really recommend playing with it.  The heads crack between the valves extremely easily and the head gaskets blow when it's convenient to them.  Hoick it out and bang an AAZ 1.9 mech TD in there for a proper upgrade, without needing any fandango electronics added to it.
