Whats the best AWG?
« on: 21 January 2009, 17:57 »
I want to re-wire my car (the 12v and ground). Thinking of battery to chassis and engine mount. Whilst the carpet is up, I'm thinking of running some cable down for a future amp and PC install.

I'll be doing the re-wire first though.

Am thinking:

Grounding the car
Alternator (connections aren't that great)
New battery clamps with 0, 4 and 8 AWG holders)
Starter motor.

What's the best AWG for that lot?

Also, how thick is 0 4 and 8 AWG wire in mm?

I am planning on getting a distribution block with an 0 AWG wire going from the battery to a fuse holder then a distrubution block under the rear seats. Reason I want a PC, is cause I'm going to fabricate, with help, a screen in the dash for music GPS and mobile stuff ect.

This is starting now and parts bought when I have money ect...

Also, would it be good to have a relay on a switch in the dash so I can cut the power to all ICE?

THANKS! Mostly wanting info on re-grounding ect.

0 gauge is the best but not the cheapest.

i think im running 4 gauge for my amps and if i can remember it is around 12mm thick.

as for a cut off power to your ice, you dont need it. amps come with a "remote" cable connection. the connection sits between the earth and +ve on your amp and you connect the remote connection on your amp to the remote connection on your headunit. Soooooooo, the amps are only on when the headunit is on.

Thanks for the info!

Yeah but remember I won't be having any headunits. Just the computer. There is a 12v out on that obviously, so I can wire that up to the amps. I guess there can be an emergancy button on the computer.

I'll build the computer myself. No point in buying on premade, I've built computers so many times, I can save some money. If 4AWG is 12mm thick, is that American or English or is there no difference? Some convertor on the web says that is is only 5mm thick.

Thanks for all the advice LL, I'm really gonna start on this project now. Tomorrow every piece of cloth on the interior is starting to be layed out. Then I will rent an industrial cleaner to clean that and our other cars.

I really want to spend cash on mods, but the engine needs to be sweet first. Fixing everything up then mods then a really good service.

i'll check the thickness/gauge of my wiring, pretty sure it was 4 gauge, but i might be wrong.

sounds like a good plan mate, didnt realise your putting in a computer. just run the remote to the +ve on the computer like you said.
