the old one was prob squashed flat :)
fingers crossed for you! another source for leaks here are the pressure switches, vag models in the 90s seem to suffer quite a bit from blown switches for some reason!

deffo not the pressure switches.

the rear face of the oil cooler was nice and clean compared to the rest. so its been leaking onto or down it and keeping the surface clean.

good run out this avo and still no oil on the bottom of the oil filter so all good so far

You'll never guess what happened on the way home from work tonight...  My oil cooler split apart right across the cast line.

I was driving down a country lane at about 55mph and suddenly lots of black splatters hit my windscreen, seriously, I was looking up at the sky out the windows thinking WTF is raining on my car!? Then ten seconds later the oil pressure buzzer comes on. I pulled over, opened my bonnet and it looked like someone had thrown a bucket of oil over my engine. The sump was more or less empty.

Boll##ks.

RAC to the rescue with a tow home. Nice mucky job for me over the next few days then...

But for the purest engine experience, displacement has no replacement. All other methods are simply attempts to artificially recreate the benefits of displacement.

Possible excess oil pressure, but surely the crankcase breather would have to be seriously blocked for it to blow the cooler, plus all temps were perfect. To be honest I'm fairly certain it was just a very very old cooler thats had hot oil and water running through it for maybe 17 years, and it just gave up...

...Albeit rather spectacularly!

You can get the coolers new from vw as a mate of mine bought one a few months back, iirc it was around £30 but it is an exchange part so you need to give them one back

Bought one from ECP this morning, £40 inc VAT. Annoyingly it didn't come with a new gasket included, so I can't finish the job now, as I forgot to check before I left the store!

Plus one of the coolant hoses attached to the cooler was so welded on, it tore rather than pull off, so I need a replacement hose now too.

In short, the car will not ready for the drive to work on Monday morning.  :undecided:
