coolant leak
« on: 20 January 2009, 22:08 »
Hey

Found a leak today in my engine bay and think it is coming from the pass side of the engine block where the coolant pipes go in. Gone on vag cat to try and work out what the part is and no help...can't find any illustration of that side of the block. So could anyone tell me the name of the part in pink below and whether it is possible it is just a seal/gasket that has gone or will I have to replace the whole thing?

Cheers!

Hi
If it is made of plastic, then replace it.

That looks like the plastic water flange. Very common for them to crack/warp then leak.

Best get a new one and a new O ring too. You can get them from the dealer. Less than a tenner I think.

Given the cost of the part and the fact you will have it all in bits anyway, probably not worth messing about just changing the O ring. Wouldn't you hate having to do the job twice?

lol good point! Just to double check i've got the right bit that is leaking, it would leak coolant if it was perished??

Knowig my luck I'd replace that it would turn out to be a split pipe!

cheers for your help

the housing and seal is about £5 from vw, clean up the surface on the head with some emery cloth before you refit it
