MK3 GTi Gearbox not funny noise

Hi fellow Dubbers, having recently changed from a MK2 GTi to a late MK3 GTi, I have noticed a funny knocking noise/clanking noise in reverse gear only. Having taken it to a garage on hearing the noise they say its a broken gear on reverse and that it is a comman problem. I have read through this forum to see if anyone else has suffered the same and cant find anything about it.  I have noticed though in this forum a gearbox chart and am I right that any gearbox from a 1.8 or 2.0 gti will replace it.?

So MK3 GTi owners anyone suffered this or suggest something else it might be

about the car, 98R 65,000 miles full history, hpi clear. all forward gears are fine and seem smooth and tight.

I have been quoted 375 for a gearbox inspection plus parts or would a replacement box be the easier and cheaper option

does it reverse fine?

are you sure the noise aint the exhaust banging of the tunnel? check the rear engine mount

my mk2 had this problem, garage kept on telling me the rear mount was fine, got it changed clunking noise went away!

My car has developed exactly the same noise today    (mk3 8v gti 97r 107k).  It's definately the gear box as I had a friend listen to it with the bonnet open when reversing.  Although with mine the knocking sound only starts once the clutch is fully out.

Again drive is fine except this.


Is it something to worry about / what should I do?

Any suggestions any one please...

Mine started doing it at 60k. Got progressively more noisey. Had it replaced with a 2nd hand box last month. Total bill came to £500 with a new clutch..f*&king thing!
