MK1 Cabriolet ICE
« on: 26 June 2003, 02:22 »
How have other Cabriolet owners fitted speakers?

A decent system really needs some 6x9's or 7x10's in the back, but if you use the parcel shelf, then when the top is down, the sound will get blocked by the roof? Does this make a really noticeable difference, and will it damage the speakers?

The other option I can see is to create some pods in the front doors, or is it possible to buy some pro ones?

Any advice apprieciated.

BTW. I have seen these cars with speakers mounted into the rear side panels as standard, but mine doesn't have these, instead has some speakers at the bottom of the front doors, and then what looks like some tweeters at the top of the front doors - these are pioneer units. Were these standard fit? How big speakers can you replace the ones in the front doors with?

Cheers

Mine has got a pair of pioneer components in the front pod, a pair of kenwood 60w 4x6 in the rear side panels run off a 4x47w head unit, and I have put a set of 17.5 cm kenwoods on the parcel shelf that run from an amp with a cut off switch at the dash for when the roof is down. to be honest the rear ones aren't needed, but do sound nice with the roof up. the rest of the speakers provide more than enough volume evn at high speed with the roof down.
Providing you have a decent head unit you sholuld get away with just putting some more in the rear side panels

Mine were there when I got the car, but the panel are so easy to take out, just take of the rear handles, A bolt behind the pull away plastic cover, then a bit of force will pop the panels out. It's easy to mark and cut the trim to suit your speakers then as it is only some type of re-enforced card.
Hope that helps

Thanks, I'll have a go at putting some 6x9's in there this weekend.

Also, wheres the best place to run power cables and pre-outs for an amp mouted in the boot, as there doesn't seem to be much of a substantial sil cover, it's just carpet tucked into the seal.

Not too sure if there is room for 6x9 but the 4x6 i have got fit nicely and sound great
As for the power, mine is taken from the power provided for the electric roof, as only one or the other can be used with ignition on or off. but there is space to run the power cable from the battery through the bulkhead, then under the passenger side (clip off the sill cover and lift carpet) remove the rear seat with the 2 screws at the front. I have my cables from the pre-out running straight down the centre along side the gear lever, under the carpet.
hope it all goes in for you, its fairly straight forward. ;D
