Spare wheel question

Hi All,

i've recently got new gti mk5, loving it, but have checked and i dont have a spare wheel....not even a get you home - space saverjob. nada. just a pump and some tyre weld like stuff, which in my experience never works...

So i am wondering what i can do to get this sorted. Choice seem to be

1) Steel wheel
2) Space saver

I am wondering if it is possible to get steel wheel to fit a GTI with is large disc brakes? would a mk4 maybe fit? I assume it is possible to call VW to get  space saver but i think that will be a pricey to get direct from them. Also would need a jack and a wheel brace etc.
Just really wondering what other folk have done in this situation...

Your car is an import and not of UK spec.

A full size spare wheel will be taller than the height of the wheel well so get a space saver from a salvage yard if you don't want to get it from vw.

Or buy a full-sized wheel + a boot lid thing that allows you to accommodate the extra height of the spare.

If you're patient you'll be able to get a Golf Mk V Spacesaver from E-bay for around £40-£50

I managed to get an unused one with the foam tray and all tools to replace my "puncture repair kit" that came with my import  :rolleyes:

I have bought a spare Monza alloy from fleabay and a set of these (approx £28 from your local VW dealer):





Can't remember the part numbers. However I had to chop some of the polystyrene off for it to fit in the boot properly. But once done it works a dream. there are little pockets for all your tools to go in.

You do lose some space but it's worth knowing that if you get a puncture then you're not stuck at going 50mph down the motorway.

Hi guys,

many thanks for your replies - i will keep an eye on ebay.

Thats one of the reasons why i shouldnt of bought it from motorpoint i guess, I'm just embrassed i never checked until it was too late..  :embarassed:

If a car doesnt have runflats or some kind of puncture repair thing with it....is it LEGAL for MP to sell cars with no spare? I thought it a legal requirement? I may be wrong....of course  :rolleyes:

it came with an air compressor and some "tyre-seal" fluid stuff.

Not much use when u put it into the tyre and it promptly pishes out a hole in the sidewall....  :huh:

I had the same issue buying from Motorpoint...

Bet you can't turn you lights of as well  :laugh:

still i bet you saved a packet on one - i certainly did and these are minor issues to overcome!
