reet, flushed the coolant system today by taking off both large pipes on the left hand side of the radiator, and also the small pipe at the top on the left that connects to the expansion tank (because it's cable tied to the large pipe just below it and didnt want to damage it in anyway).
Stuck a hose pipe up where I took the pipes off let it run clean, stuck the hose in the expansion tank to clean it out a bit too and left it there till it ran clear.
Put the hoses back on once the water had run clear, put 1ltr coolant, 1ltr water, then 1/2 a bottle of coolant into the empty bottle and filled the other bottle up with water so it was about 50/50 and put that in.
Squeezed/rev'd repeated until the hoses were getting hot, except for the bottom hose form the radiator, the by that time it was 3:30 and had to rush to Tesco to get some dinner before they closed.
After Tesco we went to the father inlaws and I had a quick feel of the bottom hose and it was warm, now after I've explained all that what I'd like to know is how much should a 1.6 Driver coolant system hold? because I've only put in about 3 ltrs of coolant/water (50/50) and I read that the GTi takes 5ltrs, does that sound right for a my model?
Also my temp guage does not go passed 1/4 now, I'm not sure if that's because it's winter (always got up to 1/2 in summer) or the sensor/valve thingy (forgot the proper name

) is foobar'd...

as I said the bottom hose and all other hoses I could find in the dim light were warm when I got to the in laws (6miles away).
Should I bother taking the sensor out and testing it in boiling hot water? or do you lot reckon it's fine and just winter keeping the temp down?
