  Dear All,

Would like some constructive help. Am looking to swap the 1.4 AEX out of my partners Mk4/6N Polo. I have done numerous engine swaps in the past, e.g. 2.0 8v into Mk1 Golf, 1.8 & 2.0 16v into Mk1 & Mk2 Golf, 1.8T's etc. All of my past has been to do with Golf's as opposed two polo's a mk2 and this mk4, I'm quite new to modding mk4 polo's my partner is nagging me for an engine transplant, I drive a 310bhp Mk5 Golf Edition 30 and a 16v KR'd Helios Blue Mk1 Golf, my partner is getting annoyed with the Mk4. I have an abundance of engines to choose from, having had so much fun with the KR 1.8 16v Mk2 Golf engine I would like to know what if anyone here has fitted one. I've seen a few in mk2 Seat Ibiza's, couple of questions if you have fitted one :-

Do the engine mount locations need to be moved in the bay to account for the KR ?

Does the 020 gearbox fit, if not which box do people use and what driveshafts are required ? Which hubs do I then need to accomodate the driveshafts - mk2 or mk3 golf gti ?

Is it also a matter of splicing the KR loom into the 6N fuse box or is an aftermarket loom available for the transplant ?

If anyone could be of assistance it would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Gareth & Nadine

all the VW's have gone bar 1.

Can you elaborate a little? Has this been done before? Have you got any links?

well a KR engine is never going to get through the emissons test as it dosent have cat and would kill one if fitted.

ADL is basicly a KR but with same style of electonic fuel injection as the ABF, also been efi it woudl make the install easyer IMO,   fuel pump in the car now will do,  wireing is just a matter of research and applying logic.

so you need to make the enigne fit in the car,   1.9D has the same style enigne block but a littel taller,   so go have a look at one of them use same style gearbox,  it'll ether be cable or rod change.   get simalar style gearbox   and desiel mounts, brackets and driveshafts  it'll more than likely fit,   not done conversion to a mk4 polo but it's vw and if that type block has been used the rest of the enigne with "simalar " blocks will go without much fuss,  only fun bit will be the exhaust  but think seats will provide the answer to that
all the VW's have gone bar 1.

  • Bora TDi 130 Highline - usually filthy.
Wouldn't it be worth looking at an Ibiza 20v? Practically the same as a Polo underneath with a stonking great 156BHp straight out of the box??? Just a thought as I have no experience of engine swaps in VWs.

Keeping schtum. Mostly.

Just one correction to Danny_p's post. If you fit a KR it won't need a CAT as the rules are you test emissions by the oldest out of the engine and car. If the engine is pre CAT regs the car doesn't need one.

might it be easier to find a scrapped Ibiza cupra with a 2.0 16v ABF as the engine, wiring loom, subframe, drive shafts , brakes would all fit as the two cars share the same front end.

  • Hello, my name is John and I'm a dub addict.
the problem with that is the ABF subframe wont fit a mk4 polo.  I think the later polos had a big block engine (1.9 diesel of some kind) but the trouble is sourcing said car so you can rob the mounts off it.

I've done some digging and I think this is what you need for big block -> mk4 polo:

6n0 199 111 F - bracket on gearbox - 20+VAT
6n0 199 555 H - gearbox mount - 51+VAT
028 199 275 A - engine bracket - 45+VAT
6n0 199 181 S - chassis leg bracket - 20+VAT
6n0 199 262 K - engine mount - 59+VAT
6n0 199 851 AH - rear support - 47+VAT

I cant say 100% as I dont know much about the 6N Polo chassis.  The engine codes for the big blocks are: AEF, AGD, ASX (1.9) and AKU (1.7).  A quick glance over etka would suggest the Lupo is also a source for this stuff :)

Oh and these cars have a variation of the 02J gearbox, the 2 offered are 02J 300 050 L and LX, which is also fitted to the Lupo.  One of the hurdles to overcome if you fit an 020 box is the gear linkage, 02J is a cable shifter.
