head gasket again??
« on: 18 January 2009, 16:04 »
:sick:hello again everyone, not been on here for a while, i was just after a bit of info on my audi, as most of you know its the 1.8t engine same in the golf etc... anyway in december 2007 we had the head gasket replaced as it was overheating and oil was contaminated at the cost of £600 from a garage in leek (staffs) and it took a few months for him to even give us a reciept anyway about 3 months after it started over heating and contamination in the oil and water this time so we took it somewhere else who did it again at the cost of £550 psi tuning (staffs) anyway we went london yesterday for a drive after cleaning it up and running some super unleaded with a bit of redex through it and while we were in traffic it the fan came on and the temp guage was showing 60 degrees so we thought nothing of it and carried on going then the temp guage went straight to 90 degrees when the fan went off and the oil light and water lights came on, we stopped immediatly and checked the oil and it was way over the full mark and very watery and the cap like a milkshake, bearing in mind we change the oil and filters every 3 months and replace it with expensive fully synthetic 10/40 oil as recommended in the book to keep her happy, when i took the header tank bottle lid off i found no water just milkshake colour froth, theres no water leaks anywhere coming from the engine, normally when i take the cap off it throws loads of sculding hot water at you anyway we had no choice but to drive it home stopping at every services checking the oil and water, im just really confused how if it is the head gasket it can keep going like this and also why didnt the temperature go over 90 degrees, all the time we were in the car the heaters and aircon were working perfectly blowing hot & cold how they should just the fans were almost on permenant in traffic until moving then they go off (obviously due to the rain and cold temperature cooling the engine down)

anyway come to it this morning oil still creamy and showing like 5-6cm over the full mark but burning no oil and no smoke or steam coming from the exhaust and didnt use any water on the way back after filling it up, also from the minuite of starting it up the oil light came on even tho its full, and yes we checked the oil and water levels and tyre pressures before we set off to london as we always do when we go for a drive, also we use the car everyday so it aint like been parked up for 6 months jumped in and thrashed etc..

do you think its the head gasket again or possibly something else? now after a few garages already having our pants off 12 months ago and now were seeing similar problem again id rather ask other peoples opinions before we take it to a garage in stoke on trent that i hope somebody is going to recommend to us!
anyway shes a 2000 w reg 1.8t quattro (remapped to 215 bhp) with just 93.000 on the clock, we had her on 62.000 2 years ago with full service history and like i said we service her every 3 months.

any help or recomendations really are much appreciated,
thanks guys

yes i thought i may have had some mis firing or major over heating myself but for suddenly lose a few litres of water on the way there then nothing on the way back i think something has broke somewhere, every now and again when i take the intercooler off sometimes thats full of oil, measured a cup full once! also i noticed the last person to do the head gasket put in some of that leak stop gasket repair stuff which you can still see on the expansion tank cap like a brown/gold glitter now could that have possibly found the leak and temporarily fixed it if there was enough of it going through the system?
thanks again

oil cooler sounds a good shout to me but also did you flush the engine out after the head gasket was changed might still have some oil and water mix still in the engine.
If your buying im selling!!!!!!!

Was the head skimmed etc. when the gasket was replaced? If the head is warped, it would reduce the life expectancy of the head gasket.
