« on: 18 January 2009, 14:58 »
wow i,m hooked. took a mkv out for test drive today....just to prove point to myself that it is a gti i want. i booked a test in the fiesta st for next week even tho i sat in one before the golf, i doubt i,ll even take it out to be honest....
loved the dsg how cool is that toy!
dealer was in southend essex, they guy was very cool, let me put me boot in a lil.yep yep yep.

only 6 weeks to go and sh!t load of saving up to do in that time!!!

gotta keep looking out for the right car at right price now.
lots of price dropping at mo so i hope i can get few more spec and lower mileage than i might of a few months ago.
fingers toes and anything else crossed!

any more advice muchly appreciated

I'd still tell you to go test-drive the ST, just so you can appreciate the differences.

Obviously have the car checked out using the new-car checklist, ask about the history of the car and make sure its had all the appropriate services and recall fixes.

And make sure you test drive the car you will buy.

Ha, I did exactly the same thing, went to test drive a mkv gti just to make sure it was the car I wanted next, had no intention of buying the car as I was going to wait 6 months and it wasn't the colour I wanted.  Bought it 2 weeks later

Do you mean you plan to drive the Focus ST next weekend? Fiesta ST is a completely different proposition.

My bro has a 3dr Focus ST 3 - he's done about 60k miles in it over 2 1/2 years but it rattles a lot and gulps fuel like crazy - I've driven it, and whist it makes an amazing noise, I much prefer my Golf Gti 3dr. :)

yep as ub said im gonna test it , mostly cos i wanna prove to myself that spending the extra3-5k is worth it.i might also look at the civic typeR and even the mini cooperS

i will test the golf i buy, but i have good mate who is second hand dealer who will hnt me one down so i will give him price range preferred specs, optional specs mileage ranges and a few comments ive picked up here on this forum so he knows what specifically to look and ask for with the mkv.

then when one comes up i will test it before he buys it.

getting excited and impatient now esp after today but ive only got one stab financially to get this right so i,ll bide my time.by the end of feb i hope a few better cars will drop into my bracket.
for example
one ive looked at 40k on the clock has dropped from 11500 to 9725 in 6 weeks, but its 5dr and altho i like the dk blue i want the black i drove today.
i also didnt realise the diff that 18"alloys make to the look untill i stepped out of the car and had parked it to a fab steel grey with 18s and noticed the black didnt.
silly things but they are now soooo important.
thanks again for the help

All those cars listed are very different!

Fiesta ST - Poor straight line performance, amazing chassis, possibly best of any hatch.
Golf GTI - excellent mix of performance and handling with great build quality
Type R - ok straight line speed, not very tunable (without spending thousands), great handling, needs to be pushed all the time
Cooper S - generally rubish, anyone who has had one and bought any other hot hatch after has commented how bad it is, poor build, handling and straight line speed

Check out an mazda 3 MP3, one of the fastest hot hatches about with understated looks and good handling. Im not a huge fan of the looks but there a very good car!

Try a MK4 R32 (should be in budget) as well.

Or just go for the MK5 gti, you wont be disappointed and i can assure you none of the other above cars are a step up!

What a load of ****

People may be sour that bmw stole the mini brand but I assure you, having driven and spent a lot of time with all the cars on that list, the cooper s handles better than all of them and sounds better to boot.  Its a bit hardcore for me, but for a one off thrash, its as quick as the golf and is as close to a go kart as you can get.  Evo listed the the R53 S as the best hot hatch you could buy until they didnt make it anymore and they gave the gti its crown.

Type r is nice but dated and low spec'd and has very little steering feel
Fiesta St is completely outclassed in this company and the na 2.0 feels like a 1.2 in comparison.  Its a supermini with a little bit of poke and nothing more

If you have driven the fiesta you will now just how much fun it is on a b-road with a superb chassis set up!

Sorry, the cooper s is awful! Ive yet to meet someone who, after selling and buying something else, didnt realise how bad it was. Constant issues, poor build, weak engine (gets boring very quickly), looks awful. If you can drive its not bad on a b-road but if your a novice its too hard to get any enjoyment out of it. Its also way too overpriced new, the JCW edition is silly money. I used to shake them off in my old ctr with little effort (bar the JCW)

The threads about the comparison (not directly) of both the MC and GTI. The GTI beats it in every way, end of.
