Notchy Gearbox

I've asked this on another forum, but wanted other peoples opinions too...

Ok people, this is relating to my 1986 mk2 golf gti.

I've noticed recently that the gearchange has got progressively more tempremental... i:e I have to wait nearly a second when changing from 2nd-1st on occasion (not everytime) before the gear will engage. This can get annoying in traffic, and has got to the stage where I'm starting to use 2nd all the time!

Before this gets any worse, I was thinking of

1) Changing the gearbox oil (as I doubt it's been done before, and after reading another thread it may release more horses!)

2) Getting one of those linkage repair kits (as seen on ebay)

3) Both of the above

4) Using 3rd as my new lowest gear and hope for the best...

How much work do the first 2 involve (bearing in mind I have little space/time/money/brainpower or patience when dealing with simple maintainence....)

And am I barking up the correct tree to cure the problem???

Cheers guys,

Ryan

changing the gearbox oil sounds good but i doubt it will release more horses.

If you use 2nd or 3rd as the 'moving off' gear. Im sure it would put more ware on your clutch which will lead to bigger problems?

Have you checked that there is enough oil in the gearbox?
Changing it for synthetic will definately help.
The weighted shift rod kits are supposed to work well.

i was always under the impression that notch was there to prevent you hitting 1st instead of 3rd when the car is moving

my car more or less wont go into 1st unless its at a standstill, and even if moving slightly it will just about go in with a scrunch

Do the gear shift repair kit (the plastic ball thingy) then change the rods (peice of cake), this willl improve the shift no end. You may also find that the alignment needs adjusting. There is a very finely splined rod under the car right under the gearstick to adjust.
