cleaning the maf?
« on: 14 January 2009, 16:37 »
what is it exactly that needs to be cleaned?  I jabe taken the MAF out, at the end that links to the airbox is a mesh of plastic, at the other end is one large pipe, and a smaller one (with the sensor protruding into it).  Am I correct in thinking 'cleaning the maf' involves undoing the two weird screws on top of the maf sensor, and removing it from the maf body?  or just spray in the pipe, and try to angle the small pipe on the carb cleaner up into the sensor??

leave it in the maf housing and spray down the tube.. don't touch the contacts

sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.. it's not something i'd suggest unless you know your maf is playing up and it's a last effort before buying a new one.

the cleaning fluid will cover the contacts anyway.. just don't poke at it with your fingers or try to rub it with a cloth

blo0dy hell why is this so complicated!!  so do you mean just spray the fluid into the big pipe (without the small clear tube attached to the carb cleaner) so the spray just comes out in a big fan.

I couldnt get my fingers near to the contacts if I tried- there's no room between the small pipe, and the contacts to get anything in there??  OR do you mean the contacts OUTSIDE the tube, that connect to the maf sensor??

In simple terms, unscrew the maf housing from the airbox, unclip the turbo inlet pipe from the other end of the maf housing and unplug it. Wipe any gunk off the inside walls of the housing with a cloth (without touching the fiddly bits) then spray the carb cleaner down the pipe for a couple of seconds in each direction. Don't use the tube for a concentrated direct spray though, too much pressure might make things worse. All you're trying to do is lift off any cack that may be stuck to it.

Ok done.  Gave it a liberal spray but not OTT- going to let it drip dry now for a few hours before putting it all back together- thats if I can- that spring-clip over the inlet pipe is a nightmare!!
