Corrosion

Hi everyone,

I was just reading through the forum and after reading some posts on here i have noticed that on my wheels i have white worms and behind the alloys i have rust.

I had put this down to normal corrosion on a car as for example the white worms on one wheel are only on the VW badge and the rust is not extensive by any means but you can easily see it.

My car is probably 18 months old so is this normal or should i be worried? Is there anything i can do?

Warranty work, especially for White worm. I got my tailgate badge replaced one day before the warranty expired.

Get the wheels and boot badge replaced under warranty. These are common problems. I thought the boot badge only corroded on the early cars, though.

You'd be lucky to get anything done about the rust behind the wheels, though. You may have to do what a few people have done (including me) and take the wheels off, sand the rust off and paint with silver smooth hammerite.

You'll have to do what we have all done and go back to the dealer for a replacement wheel and centre cap.
I now have 3 new wheels on a two and a half year old car.

Make sure that you inspect the new wheel before its fitted because many of the new ones have faults.

Can anyone actually tell me what is causing the white worms?

I know this might seem like a really silly question but as the white worms are only on the "VW" bit on the wheels will they still be replaced under warranty?

From what I understand it is water getting underneath the lacquer - it should be easier getting centre caps than full rims.  A lot of people on here had "white worm" on the actual rim face - I had white worm spots on mine (outer lip of the rim)  and they used this as an excuse to replace all four when they scratched the crap out of my original alloys performing a four wheel alignment

My centre caps have got white worm. Can I get them to send me some new ones under warranty?

Redrobin had it REALLY bad on his one, there is a pic somewhere (cant find it) and its shocking

The dealer will replace centre caps and wheels as and when. Just make sure that they fit a new metal valve (if fitted) to match the other wheels.

VW aware of corrosion issues with alloys and with hubs, and should replace both if required.

alloys - reason is moisture reacting with the laquer on the face of the wheel which makes it corrode. dealer will replace under warranty but check when you have the new one that it matches the rest as some have found that they are slightly different wheels, (could be a dealer error, not sure but has happened!)

hubs - again should be replaced under warranty but there is not alot of point to tell you the truth as in 6 months they will look the same, a few peeps have painted theirs with hammerite or similar and it does the trick.

Do you use turtle wax alloy spray? cant remember the correct name. But im almost sure i didnt have these white worms and then i did my alloys and boom here they are.

I can't gaurantee that's it, as i didn't pay attention to the condition before i washed them lol
