1.8T AUM persistent problems
« on: 14 January 2009, 09:08 »
Morning all.

Driving to work yaesterday the dreaded engine light came on again!!! I've scaneed it and the codes I'm getting again are 17705 and 17545. These codes have been thrown up for about the last two years. I keep thinking I've sorted it and then a couple of weeks / months later they are back

I've now bypassed the N249 and changed the turbo hoses. It's also been serviced last Friday and now the dreaded 17705 and 17545 codes have been thrown up again!!!! So far it's had:

New DV (Forge 007p)

New MAF (re-checked by VW and it was running at 150mg) although I don't necessarily believe a word they say as they charged me £50 for 15 minutes work to look at it and then said there is deffinitley something wrong but would need a few hours with it in Vagcom!!!

N249 bypass with a new silicone hose for the FPR and top of DV

CAI (cheap one though!)

New turbo hoses (not Samco ones but I couldn't afford those at the time)

Re-mapped by Nick in July last year.

The remap has definitley improved the car a hell of a lot but it still seems to be holding back (obviously due to issues before it was done) It also feels a little rough and when stopped it traffic the revs do fluctuate slightly but not a huge amount. But yet again I might just be paranoid

Unfortunatley I only have a cheap code reader and not Vagcom so I can't do anything other than find these codes. I was thinking about getting the liquid thingy but I don't really want to part with too much cash while I'm still getting these codes thrown up. Any help would be greatly appreciated and anyone in the Farnborough Hampshire area that has Vagcom that wants to earn some cash let me know.

Cheers all

Good point. I last did one before it was remapped last July but it as it's an AUM so I need to reset the throttle body with Vagcom. I believe you can do this on liquid so I may think I'll need to speak to Nick about getting one of these fitted!!!

Cheers

Dan

With the AUM, open the bonnet, open the drivers door (and leave open) and turn the ignition to II, you will hear your TB make a high pitch squeal for about 30 seconds, when this stops your TB is re-adapted.  VAG-Com not necessary.  Don't touch the accelerator during this process.

Even if you don't do this your TB would eventually re-adapt itself over a few miles / start-stop cycles.

I think I'll give that a go then. Last time I cleaned it I may have been a little gentle with it as I've read a few posts saying not to drench with the cleaner and to be careful of moving the butterfly! To be honest it was probably a month or two between cleaning it and getting Nick to do the remap and it was still shoeing as needing alignment. Does anyone know if I do it and it doesn't realign properly could this cause any damage?

Let me know how you get on with that mate as im interested in cleaning mine.

I think dodgy Mk4 golfs must reside in the area. Im in Fleet and so far mine has been nothing but trouble, just ordered a wiring loom to the coil packs. The cabling is all cracking and the cores inside corroding. This casues high resistance which is not good when firing a spark plug, the reason for my lumpy pull away and at times complete lack of turbo.

They do seem to be a bit of a nightmare!!!! I think my coilpacks had been changed just before I bought it as the looked fairly clean when I changed my plugs. Even with all the trouble I've had with it I'd be very reluctant to let it go. I really want to get a full Miltek next but it's not worth throwing money at it if I'm not going to get the best out of it!!! I'll keep you posted how it goes!

Just cleaned the throttle body durnig my lunch break. So far so good!!!! It was fairly dirty but but not too bad. Feels smoother already but theres still a very slight fluctuation in the revs but a definite improvement on what it was. I'll give it a hundred or so miles to see how it settles in and let you nkow. Top tip about the throttle realignment by the way!!!!

Thanks all
