From what I've been reading in the past few days,

The ABF is a tall block
The 9A is a mid block
the 6A is a short block - which needs a sump off another block

'nother question. Are the pistons and the crankshafts fitted to the 9a, 6a and ABF blocks the same?
I know the ABF has longer conrods.

the 6A is a 9A  but in north south format,     sump and oil pickup are diffrent.  kr bits are straight swap
all the VW's have gone bar 1.

ABF  cranck is diffrent to 6A and 9A.  6A and 9A cranckshafts are same as 2e and same style as kr PB  ect,  abf has same cranck as AGG

pistons  ummm  they look tha same,   have some  out on the floor atm can measure
all the VW's have gone bar 1.

ABF crank is the same as 9a, 2e/AGG/ADY crank is not the same as any 16v jobber.  Rods are the same on ABF/2e/ADY, KR & 9a rods are the same.
As for pistons, early 2e pistions are different from later ones, late 2e ones are the same as ADY ones. AGG ones are different again.  ABF pistons are the same as late 9a ones, early 9a ones are different.

edit: this is based on a party number search on etka anyway.  I have seen 2e rods that were more chunky than ABF ones, perhaps ABF/2e rods were superceeded by a new thype...
