Excellent, thanks a lot. So whilst looking at the alloys it says they come with tyres as optional and are listed as 215/45/17 Would they be right?

Just for an example

Tyres sizes as fitted by VW from factory are:

16" wheels: 205/55 R16
17" wheels: 225/45 R17
18" wheels: 225/40 R18

If you stick with those sizes then your speedo and MPG should stay roughly the same...

Only just got the car, you think that would look aight? I don't really have a clue when it comes to this, just wan't it to look swish

16" .. was informed i might have to look at lowering my car if i go any bigger then that, and i think rich said that the mpg and speedo should stay relatively the same  In time to come id loveee to go bigger, but with my next golf maybe wish there was a way i could stick them on the car to have a proper look at them

If your not sure then hold off. If your going for 16" then wmy not go for some Montreal II wheels which were standard on the GTi?? They are on E-bay for around £150 a set with tyres.... At least you would know what they look like!
