Sourcing a good gearbox

The gearbox is definately on its way out on my gti 8v digi.
Rather than rebuild it (timely/costly) ive got a friendly mechanic who is offering to swap the old one out.
Other than ebay, can anyone offer any advice on good places to look?

Get one 'off the shelf' from a vehicle breaker. You should then get some kind of warranty. Usually about three months. Be sure to get the right one though.
