Not got one myself, but a few people say that a 1.8T with BMC airbox sounds superb!!!

Got to admit though the noise from my old MK3 VR6 I still miss....18mpg though.....don't miss it that much

V6 4motion.

You can't get more fun A to B than that (unless you go the whole hog and get an R32).

Exactly the same looks as a GTI but with a sneaky bit of 4x4 hidden underneath.  I've got a stretch of road with 5 or 6 roundabouts along a dual carriageway on my way to work - I pray for rain!

Crap on mpg but who cares - get a 2000 and you'll have the lower tax to offset your fuel fees.

One final point to be considered is the engine/exhaust sound from the V6 - simply awesome in comparison to even the 1.8T

You're right.  They sound awesome & grip on the wet stuff.  8)

BUT.............................

The lardy V6 4M won't handle as well as the 1.8T (heavier body & heavier lump hanging over the front wheels), will suffer from more transmission loss, won't be able to brake as late, will drink like a fish, will be more expensive to service, more expensive to insure & cost a bomb to extract decent power (try getting 45-60 bhp for £200 with one of those! :P

Anyhow...................................

1.8T over V5, anyday!!!  :smug:

(Unless you need an Auto?  :undecided:

pps  S3 FTW!!!  8)  4wd & tunable lump.  ;)

I would go for the 1.8T any day

Not got the sound of the 4Motion, but is the most sensible option in terms of mpg and tunability!

The 4mo sounds awesome (especially with aftermarket exhaust) and grips like superman ringing out his laundry! (they do handle well, I have driven a few).

However, trying to get a nice one is like rocking horse shi.......

A V5 sounds good too, not quite V6, it is more of an offbeat rumble, almost like a Subaru or V5 Audi Quattro of the 80's. I havent driven one but a lot of people say they don't really have much going for them.

Which brings us along to the 1.8T!

It is light, it is immensly tunable and you can improve the grip and handling with possibly the biggest amount of parts available for all the mk4 platforms.

It will never sound like a v6, but with the right mods and in good condition it will go a lot better than one.

They are also getting cheap to buy and insure now, and mine returns around 35mpg, if it was legal i'd make love to it!

There is no law about shagging your car!
